Whole

What was it that fell

from the sky

and took my breath with it

down to the sea?

The horizon swallowed it whole.

A life slivered on a china plate

for a party worn out

from its pleasure?

or a vestibule made for a shallow audience.

The offering of my soul.

And I looked. And looked.

(held the ashes in my hands

   and held my breath)

For Love (a sea of it)

to swallow me whole

and be empty no longer.
